Frequently asked questions
Do I need an account?
No. Open the app and start using it. Everything works offline.
How do I keep my progress when I change devices?
Progress is stored only on the current device and is not synced. On your old device, open Settings → Export learning record and save the file to the Files app or iCloud Drive, or AirDrop it to your new device. On the new device, open Settings → Import from backup and choose the file.
Importing merges with any records already on the new device and never deletes anything; a copy of the current record is kept automatically before the import. If you move your whole iPhone or iPad with iCloud Backup or Quick Start, your progress usually comes across as well.
How do I switch between English and Chinese?
Choose it in Settings → 语言 / Language. The dictionary’s explanations and example translations are part of the content and remain in Simplified Chinese in the English interface.
What does “New words per day” mean?
It is the number of new senses spaced review introduces each day. The default is 20; change it in Settings → Review in steps of 5, from 5 to 60. Due reviews are never capped, and once today’s new words are done you can choose Learn 10 more on the screen shown when the session ends.
What are the question styles?
- Recognition: see the English, recall the academic meaning.
- Cloze: see an example with a gap, recall the target form.
- Chinese to English: see the Chinese meaning, recall the English expression.
- Mixed (default): new words start with recognition, then rotate through cloze and recall.
Read-aloud is silent or sounds robotic
Read-aloud uses the voices built into your device, so first turn up the media volume. Choose an American or British voice in Settings → Speech and feedback. For a more natural voice, download an enhanced English voice in the iPhone or iPad Settings → Accessibility → Spoken Content → Voices → English; the app picks the best installed voice automatically.
Where is the previous list?
The previous 638-entry list is kept separately. It appears automatically if you have learning records in it, and you can turn it on in Settings → Previous list.
Purchases and re-downloads
The app is a paid download with no in-app purchases or subscriptions. You can re-download it free from the App Store with the Apple Account used to buy it.
